Update from Bob Patrick in McCall: (Bob is building a Waco Bi-Plane).
The fabric on the upper two wings and center section are cleaned and ready for paint. I have a new Citation HVLP by Axis products with a respirator installed in the unit. I wanted to get used to the gun, as they paint differently, before I started on the wings.

So I cleaned up all of the tail feathers, which is 5 pieces (horizontal stab., vertical stab., two elevators and the rudder) and prepped them for paint. I installed hooks in the ceiling of the paint booth, etc. I even installed a water hose rack to hold the extra hose from the respirator and the paint gun hose. They are taped together so they won't get tangled. I practiced moving around with all the gear on, it’s just like a diver with full hood and suit.

Finally I mixed the paint and was all ready to shoot. I started on the horizontal stabilizer and had painted for about 5 minutes when poof - no paint came out. I hung the gun up, disconnected the breather hose, and went outside the booth. The hose that supplied air to the gun had melted off at the unit. I was really upset and was going to call them, but it was about 3:30 p.m. and an hour later in Illinois where they are based.

Then I decided to salvage the operation, so I switched to my el cheapo, small, gravity spray gun and primed all the parts. I talked to the company the next day and after much discussion it came out that about a one foot long heat hose hooks to the machine and the paint hose is supposed to hook to that. It wasn't included with the machine and the instruction Manuel didn't say anything about it. They normally included it with everything and had failed to do so. Much apology, etc.

I applied the finish white paint with the little gun yesterday, no problems. I will have to find something else to practice on before I start on a wing. The exhaust fan works so good that you have to have the garage door to the house open and two windows open upstairs in the bedroom to pull air thru the heated house to the paint booth in the garage. Zero vapor floating around while painting.
