Our June meeting will be on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at the Payette Airport

Program: Jim Jensen, Ontario City Planner

Bob Troxel will be bringing refreshments
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- President’s Message:
I hope everyone has been making use of the good flying weather we’ve been having. I’ve been able to fly several times in the past couple of months, including the Young Eagles’ event at Weiser on May 20th. We had a pretty good turnout of kids and pilots.

Speaking of Young Eagles, I received some feedback on the Young Eagles’ credits we sent to Chapter 902. Thanks in part to our contribution; they were able to send three kids to the EAA Air Academy instead of the original two they had planned. There is a short bio of each of the three kids later in the newsletter. Thanks to all the pilots for donating their credits.

As everyone should know by now, we’ve lost our meeting room. The room will be remodeled and become pare of the Ontario Aviation Museum. The Ontario Airfaire will also now be sponsored by the Ontario Aviation Museum Association. The museum is a great development, but leaves us with no regular meeting place or storage location for chapter assets.

The storage problem has been temporarily solved by a storage container placed at the airport. All of the Chapter’s possessions for the old clubhouse were loaded into the container. Many thanks to everyone who assisted with the move.

The meeting place is a different story. We’re essentially nomads for now. Roger Smith has offered his hangar and the Payette airport has been offered as a meeting place. I think we will just play it a month at a time. The June meeting will be at the Payette Airport. I think that decision was largely driven by the fact that it was hot at the May meeting and the room at the Payette Airport reportedly has air conditioning.

We’re still looking at options for a permanent facility, but there is nothing promising at this point.

Ken Simmons
President

Minutes of last meeting
Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 837 , 5-17-06

The meeting was called to order by President Ken Simmons. The minutes of the last meeting were read and corrected, Vale will be May 20th. The financial report was read and accepted. Seven members had paid their dues in the last month and the 50.00 dollar corporation fee was paid. Guests were introduced: Dale Alexander and Karrie Widner.

Old Business
President Ken Simmons talked to Gordon Rock the benefactor for Nampa EAA, there are no funds available right now but if Ken will send some information we will be on a list for future funds.

John Hollis will check about the possibility of the EAA helping to put a fuel tank at Payette airport. Cheryl suggested that Chapter 837 may want to help with the sponsorship of the fuel tank at Payette.

Cheryl Cruson will check with Youngbird about the use of the room at Payette airport for EAA meetings. Right now the June meeting is scheduled for Payette and the July meeting may be at Weiser.

Ken Simmons said there are two scholarships per year available each for EAA and CAP members. Dave Patchett was interested for his daughter, Christina.

Cheryl reported that the Murphy fly-in was a good one as the entertainment was excellent. It was the first annual Blue Grass Festival we hope for more people to fly in next year.

Alan Daniels checked out Pelican point and said was OK but has a soft spot on one end.

Dave Patchett said that Big Creek is open.

Linda Daniels said the EAA sign that was out in front of the Airport it is in their hangar and could use some volunteer labor.

Kevin Horiup reported that the Weiser fly-in and Young Eagles fly will be Saturday. Dale will take the cooker over Thursday and pilots will be needed to start flying kids by 8:30. Weiser Chamber of Commerce will be making lunch and there will be a 5.00 charge for breakfast. Linda and Cheryl will check on breakfast supplies.

We still need someone to bring refreshments to the July meeting to be held in Weiser.

Kerry Widner reported on the Eagle Flight project. The around the world flight will be postponed due to lack of funds for the increased fuel prices.

Young Eagle rally will be held June 17th in Boise. We will fly out of Boise Executive Terminal, coffee and doughnuts will be served. Consult www.theeagleflight.org.

Dale Alexander reported on Young Eagle Blind and Deaf fly-in on May 3rd at Gooding, Idaho. Dale said there were some really good stories.

New Business
Ken Simmons suggested that we think about alternating meetings with EAA 103 and participate in the State of Idaho meetings with a national speaker. For example, the March Idaho Aviation symposium. We discussed needing more exposure for the club to obtain more members. Ken suggested we have a booth at the Payette Co. Fair August 9-12th. The booth would be 6’ by 10’ and would cost 75.00. The booth would not have to be manned 100% of the time if set up appropriately. Kevin Horiup motioned to spend the 75.00 and seconded by David Patchett and passed unanimously. We also discussed having more public service announcements in the Argus Observer and the radio. Ken volunteered to arrange for these.

Ken mentioned that he has the Oshkosh notam video available.

It was decided to make the next fly-out at Midvale on Saturday June 24th.

Ken will check on insurance requirements now that we are nomads.

Kevin Horiup reported that Don Ritske who lived in Weiser had three Navions and had worked on the electronics of the SR-71 blackbird and the Rutan around the world flight. He passed away at the age of 95.

Dave Patchett wants to borrow the cooker for the Maule association cookout to be held at Big Creek July 14 & 15th.

Hugh Lackey reported that General Aviation News said that an historic agreement was signed between FAA and NASO for more information go to www.faa.gov,naso.org.

We decided to consider having a fly-out and cook-out at Big Creek July 22nd as the cooker will be up there.

The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served.

Respectfully submitted by both Dale and Cheryl Cruson

Other items
June Meeting: We were able to empty the clubhouse Tuesday, May 23 with lots of help. We are planning to be nomads for a while and go to different airports. Our June meeting will be at the Payette Airport at 7:30 pm and plan for July at the Weiser Airport. August will be at the Daniels and we will go from there.

Weiser Young Eagles Fly-In: We had a great time flying Young Eagles and eating breakfast at Weiser on May 20, 2006. We had a really good turn out of pilots, with two new pilots flying Young Eagles: John Hollis and Randy Daniels. The breakfast was delicious and there was a steady stream of kids for flights. Kevin Hoirup did a great job keeping things organized and we really appreciate Dale Alexander coming over to run the computer for all the certificates.

Kids flown: 119

Pilots: John Baglien, John Hollis, Dave Koeppen, Randy Daniels, Frank Thompson, David Creig, Phil Ellison, Ken Simmons, Kevin Hoirup.

Ground Crew: Dale Cruson, Cheryl Cruson, Roger Smith, Hal Harris, Linda Daniels, Kevin’s wife, several of Franks family, Bob Bonzac and many others

Some of us flew over to Vale for lunch at their fly-in after leaving Weiser. They had a nice turn out of people.

The Young Eagles Credits we donated to Chapter 902 were used and allowed them to send two kids instead of three. A short bio of each follows:

Timothy is 14 and has had a passion for aviation for many years. He mows lawns and does other chores at a seniors only (55+) mobile home park to make money for flying lessons. At last count he had 17 hours of flight training, all paid for from his own work. He says, "I hate grass!" But he loves flying.

Trevor is into RC modeling and flying. At one of our YE rallies he got a ride in a C-182. He then built a model 182 with a 6 foot wing span. While he was building it, he visited his YE pilot to examine the 182 he rode in and to take photos so he could make his model as authentic as possible. When it was finished, he brought it to one of our chapter meetings to show it off and talk to the members about RC modeling. During our interview, he actually knew what an RV-6 was and asked an interviewer about his RV! He wants to fly for a living.

Heather is the extra one, being able to go because of the generosity of people like your members. She is 16 and wants to be an airline pilot. She recently went to Mexico with her church group to help with a vacation Bible school. She comes from a low income, single parent family and is earning the money on her own to pay for her transportation and the portion of her tuition not covered by YE credits. Because of her particular situation, all concerned agreed that it would be best for her to pay her own way beyond the YE credits.

FYI from Dan Moudree: Are you all aware the FAA is trying to relocate the Boise TRACON contollers to Salt Lake City? Salt Lake doesn't want 'em and Boise doesn't want to loose 'em, so the fight is on. My friend Mark is President of the Boise Controllers Group and has taken the FAA head on. Now he is asking for local pilot support to keep the team in Boise. Please spread the word to local pilots in asking them to join in the July 5th meeting in Boise with the FAA all 4 of Idaho's legislators to help the cause. The forum will be at 4 p.m. July 5 in the Boise River Room at Boise Airport. Thanks and good flying. Dan

Late news about the TRACON: The House voted 261-166 for an amendment, offered by Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings and promoted by the Idaho lawmakers, to bar any money appropriated to the FAA from being used to "eliminate, consolidate, co-locate, or plan for the consolidation or co-location of a Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON)." The amended appropriations bill still must be considered by the Senate.

Arlingtion Info: Lloyd Thompson from EAA Chapter 103, has four reserved campsites at Arlington, available for sale. These campsites are located close to the flight line in Section B, rows BB and BC. Cost is $90.00.

This includes:
A campsite for the week, beginning July 4, and 1 adult weekly admission for an EAA member. You will need to pay another $10, 00 at the gate if you are not a national EAA member.

For additional information call Lloyd Thompson, 343-7834.

Local Fly-Outs:

June 17, 2006: Eagle Flight is hosting a Young Eagles Rally, inviting Youth 8-17 years old to receive complimentary airplane rides. Its open to the public from 9:00am-3:00 pm. Pilots meeting/overview 8:30 am at the Boise Airport Terminal in front of the Executive Terminal

June 24th at Midvale: For those who have not been there recently, they have a nicely paved runway now and want to show it off to the community. Like Weiser, this will be family day with emphasis on Young Eagles. The pilots have to back taxi to the runway (much like we did in Parma last year) so we need a good amount of ground crew to keep this safe. We are asking the pilots and ground crew to show up at 8:30 for briefings at this event. The local Lions club will be serving breakfast.

July 22, 2006: Big Creek Fly-In Breakfast

(Editor’s note): Our e-mail address has been changed from aldaniels@fmtc.com to aldaniels@fmtcblue.com. I am leaving June 4th for two weeks to go visit Alan in Alaska. He said today they are getting the floats out to put on the plane so we can do some float plane flying in Alaska. I’m really looking forward to it.
